Braille Bibles for the visually impaired in Angola: An estimated 295 million people worldwide are visually impaired, 40 million of whom are totally blind. The Scottish Bible Society is currently working to provide Braille Bibles for people with sight impairment in Angola, where blind people do not have the same standing as those with healthy sight and are often marginalised and treated as second class citizens. Please pray with us as we seek to give people with Visual Disabilities the opportunity to experience the joy of reading God’s Word for themselves. Pray that the gospel may transform many lives as more people have access to a Braille Bible. Pray too that the church in Angola would reach out to those with a disability and become a more inclusive community.
Bible-a-Month and Light at Sunset projects: Millions of people around the world do not have access to the Bible but long to have a copy of their own. The Bible-a-Month Partnership is a commitment by the Scottish Bible Society to twelve different projects each year where Bibles or Bible-based resources reach those who need and want them. The November Bible-a-Month Partnership project is in Chile. The ‘Light at Sunset’ project brings comfort, care, and community through God’s Word to older people who are being encouraged to gather together to study the Bible. Pray that they will find renewed joy in scripture by reading the large-print bibles provided.
Trauma due to conflict in the Middle East: Pray for Christians experiencing ongoing and devastating trauma as a result of the conflict in Iraq, Syria and other parts of the Middle East. Please pray for refugees who are asking for Bibles, that, as they read the Scriptures, God will draw close to them.
Born to Love project brings children hope: Give thanks for the Born to Love project being run by the Chilean Bible Society to promote Christian and family values among children and teenagers. Pray, as these young people read God’s word together, that many lives will be changed as they meet with Jesus.
Light in Amazonia boat brings hope: For over 50 years, Light in Amazonia (Luz na Amazônia), an outreach programme launched by the Bible Society of Brazil, has been working to provide social, spiritual and medical assistance to riverside communities facing situations of extreme need. Riverside dwellers face exclusion, isolation, illiteracy, child and slave labour, violence, sexual exploitation, disease, famine, and human trafficking. Most homes do not have electric power, sewerage or piped water systems (the water all comes from the river); leaving many at risk of contracting water-borne diseases. The Light in Amazonia boat has been specially designed with medical consultation rooms, a laboratory and a pharmacy; and is staffed by doctors, dentists and other health care specialists who are providing medical check-ups and tests, dental assistance, physical therapy and, most important of all, spiritual teaching. Please pray for the Bible Society of Brazil as they continue this work. Pray that as people are helped with their physical problems that God would also touch their hearts as they hear and read His Word.
Natural disasters and the stress to children: Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere and has still not recovered from the devastating earthquake back in 2010. More recently, Hurricane Matthew struck which directly affected more than 2 million Haitians, including 55,000 who were previously living in tents and had to find shelter during the hurricane. Many children are struggling with stress caused by the natural disasters and also violence, hunger, and illness. Please pray for the Haitian Bible Society as they provide New Testaments to these children. Pray that the children will know God’s peace and love in their lives.
Bibles needed for Cuba: The need for Bibles in Cuba is urgent as 40% of believers do not have a Bible, many sharing one Bible between a whole Bible study group. Furthermore, many who do have Bibles find that they are old and so well used that they are in a very poor condition. The One Million Bible Mission project will work with churches from all denominations to distribute Bibles to Christians in Cuba who desperately want their own copy of God’s word. The Bible Commission (the name for the Bible Society in Cuba) are also providing scriptures for children and youth, and large print Bibles for the elderly. Only Bibles donated through Bible Societies around the world are allowed into Cuba. Pray for the import and distribution of Bibles into Cuba, and that everyone desperately waiting will soon experience the joy of having their own copy of God’s word.
Scriptures for new believers in Liberia: Many new Christians in Liberia live in rural parts of the country and are very poor. This means that they cannot afford to buy a Bible in their own language.
The Bible Society will work to meet this need by distributing Scriptures to new believers, and also providing Proclaimers (Audio Bibles) so that people can listen to God’s Word. The project will also organise literacy classes so that people can learn to read in their own language.
It is the prayer of the Society that more people will come to know Jesus Christ through learning to read by using God’s Word.
Pray for everyone involved in this project: Bible Society staff, church partners and trainers as they are involved in evangelism in the rural parts of the country
Serving the persecuted church in Iraq: Christians are migrating from Iraq in high numbers as a result of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The Bible Society is working to serve the persecuted Church through providing Bibles and strengthening people to remain as steadfast witnesses for Christ.
Through building strong church relationships, and with the help of several Christian leaders in Iraq, the Bible Society is striving to encourage Christians to remain in their country for the purpose of preserving Christianity in the region.
Pray for strength and protection for everyone working in such a dangerous and challenging area of our world.
Pray for Christians that they will have strength and endurance to sustain all obstacles that threaten their lives and freedom.
