Technology used in the Recruitment Process
In this section we will help you navigate the world of AI (artificial intelligence) and ATS (applicant tracking systems) used in recruitment.
While not all employers or recruiters will use this kind of technology, it is becoming more common so is something to be aware of, particularly if you have been out of the jobs market for a couple of years.
AI can be used by both jobseekers (to help them compose a CV) and recruiters (through ATS systems). An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is a software tool that helps employers and recruiters screen, filter and track candidates through the hiring process.

Examples of ATS screening exercises
ATS recruitment screening tools are now commonplace but can feel intimidating. Here are some common ones you may encounter:
Pre-employment screening tests – these can include digital background checks, Right to work in the UK checks/ DBS checks.
Resume/ Application form screening - if an employer receives a large number of applications ATS systems can be used to sift out the most suitable ones by identifying keywords and qualifications on your CV or application form. This saves times for the employer but can also remove unconscious bias and create a more level playing field for all applicants.
This article from The Green Recruitment Company, looks at ways to optimise resume formats, incorporating relevant keywords, quantifying achievements, and using impactful action verbs to ensure your CV will pass AI screening.
Video screening – the use of video is now commonplace on social media and is being used more and more in recruitment. Video screening is slightly different to a Zoom or Microsoft Teams interviews, where you are having a virtual interview with a human being.
In a video screening interview, you are sent software links to submit videos based on questions submitted by the recruiter. AI tools may then be used, to assess the words you use, how you say them and your body language.
