Hot Topics in Creation Care - ‘People cannot flourish if their environment is degraded or polluted’
On June 6, 2025, we hosted an event titled "Hot Topics in Creation Care," focusing on the urgent need for environmental stewardship and sustainable practices within our organisations, churches and personal lives.
This event is particularly relevant as the conversation around climate change and creation care continues has evolved significantly over the past few years. The critical role of faith-based organisations in driving positive change is as important as ever.
“The Earth is the Lord's and everything in it..."
The event began with Caroline Pomeroy from Climate Stewards discussing the importance of creation care and its integration into organisational practices. She emphasised the biblical foundation for creation care, highlighting that the Earth belongs to God and that humans are called to be stewards of His creation.
The current state of our changing climate is a drastic picture, with a worrying trend of record temperatures and significant health, migration, and justice impacts. Caroline mentioned the decline in global biodiversity and the rise in renewable energy capacity as both challenges and progress in environmental efforts.
Caroline highlighted the role of churches and Christian organisations in addressing climate change, citing ambitious targets set by denominations like the Church of England and the Church of Scotland.
Caroline introduced Climate Stewards' work in helping organisations measure, reduce, and offset their carbon footprints. She explained their approach to carbon footprint audits, environmental policies, and offsetting projects in the Global South. You can find out more about the work of Climate Stewards here.
"People cannot flourish if their environment is degraded or polluted."
We also heard from Michael representing SIL. Michael discussed how SIL integrates creation care into their mission. He shared their journey of adopting a theological statement on creation care and practical initiatives like the Faith and Farming program.
Finally, we heard from Jo and Victoria from CMS. Despite not having sustainability as part of their job role, they decided to take on their organisation’s approach to creation care as a passion project. They shared their experiences in implementing environmental policies within their organisation, including a carbon audit and offsetting initiatives. Their practical insights highlighted the importance of internal advocacy and the challenges of engaging staff in sustainability efforts.
