Generative AI Statement Template - For Christian Organisations
Posted on 30 September 2024 by Global Connections

After the AI events of late 2023 and early 2024 there was a felt need for a resource to support organisations in the regulation and usage of Generative Artificial Intelligence. Nick Swain (Zorva Consulting) and Clive Thomas (All Nations) have very kindly created this to share with the Network.
A Summary of the Generative AI Statement:
What is Generative AI?
Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create images, text or audio output in response to an input, or ‘prompt’, that we give it. It learns from lots of examples and then uses our prompting, together with what it has learned, to make something new and original. Think of it as an artist who learns to paint in the style of many famous painters and then creates unique paintings in any style we ask for. This technology is exciting but also challenges us to ask questions such as “what counts as original work when a computer is the one creating it?”.
Applications of Generative AI
Generative AI has a multitude of applications across different sectors. It can be used to generate creative content such as artwork, audio and copywriting, as well as translation and transcription, making it a valuable tool for charitable organisations. It can also streamline processes by automating tasks like customer service responses, content creation, and data analysis. To explore more relevant uses of Generative AI please see Phil Prior's article on AI and Mission.
Key Benefits and Challenges
The potential benefits of Generative AI are vast. It can support creativity, increase efficiency, and provide new opportunities for innovation. However, it also presents many challenges and raises important questions. For instance, what constitutes original work when a computer generates it? This technology prompts us to carefully consider concepts of creativity and originality. The use of Generative AI also raises significant concerns around its environmental impact, data security, and its inability to avoid making things up.
Ensuring Safe and Impactful Uses
Nick Swain and Clive Thomas emphasise the importance of staying safe while leveraging Generative AI for maximum impact. It's crucial to approach Generative AI with a clear understanding of its capabilities and limitations to harness its full potential responsibly and in a way that honours God and each other.

Conclusion
Generative AI is an exciting and rapidly advancing field that offers numerous possibilities. By understanding its potential applications and limitations, we can better navigate this technological landscape and make informed decisions regarding its use. Taking all this into consideration, we hope the statement below (developed by Nick and Clive) will serve as a helpful template for you to use in creating an appropriate and relevant Artificial Intelligence statement for your organisation.
