Generative AI Statement Template - For Christian Organisations
Posted on 30 September 2024 by Global Connections
After the AI events of late 2023 and early 2024 there was a felt need for a resource to support organisations in the regulation and usage of Generative Artificial Intelligence. Nick Swain (Zorva Consulting) and Clive Thomas (All Nations) have very kindly created this template using the discussions from the events to share with the Network.
A Summary of the Generative AI Statement:
What is Generative AI?
Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create images, text, or audio in response to an input, or a ‘prompt’. It 'learns' from huge archives of data and numerous examples, combining this learning with human prompts to generate new content. It may be helpful to Imagine it as a digital art student who has mastered the techniques of various famous painters and can produce unique works in a similar style.
Applications of Generative AI
Generative AI has a multitude of applications across different sectors. It can be used to generate creative content such as artwork, audio and copywriting, as well as translation and transcription, making it a valuable tool for charitable organisations. It can also streamline processes by automating tasks like customer service responses, content creation, and data analysis. To explore more relevant uses of Generative AI please see Phil Prior's article on AI and Mission.
Key Benefits and Challenges
The potential benefits of Generative AI are vast. It can support creativity, increase efficiency, and provide new opportunities for innovation. However, it also presents many challenges and raises important questions. For instance, what constitutes original work when a computer generates it? This technology prompts us to carefully consider concepts of creativity and originality. There are also significant environmental concerns relating to the use of Generative AI. As well as serious concerns about data security, and the inability of a Generative AI system to avoid making things up. These issues are addressed in greater detail in the statement below.
Ensuring Safe and Impactful Uses
Nick Swain and Clive Thomas emphasize the importance of staying safe while leveraging Generative AI for maximum impact. Nick Swain offers a range of services to help with this, including data protection and Theory of Change advice. It's crucial to approach Generative AI with a clear understanding of its capabilities and limitations to harness its full potential responsibly and in a way that honours God and each other.
